- For this new version, 20 incentives in total are available. Ten will be given to works of non-fiction and fiction of $9,000,000 COP (around $2,420 USD for each grant) and other ten incentives for children’s literature or short publications of $4,500,000 COP ($1,210 USD each).
- Thanks to the Reading Colombia more than 22 incentives have been awarded, from 2018 to date, to 18 titles translated into 6 languages.
Bogotá, D.C., August the 13th, 2021. As an incentive to the publishing sector to promote the work by Colombian authors and publishers abroad, the Ministry of Culture, the National Library of Colombia and the Colombian Book Chamber, launch the 3rd edition of the Reading Colombia, with the co-financing program for the translation and promotion of the Colombian literary and scientific works in foreign languages.
The main goal is to promote the internationalization of the Colombian publishing sector and to disseminate the works of national authors in other countries. Thanks to this project, founded in 2018, 22 incentives have been awarded for the translation of 18 Colombian works into six languages in the markets of Canada, Denmark, Egypt, United States, Italy and Turkey, where Colombian authors have been read since.
For this version, 10 incentives will be awarded to works of non-fiction and fiction (novel, history, poetry, theater, children’s & YA literature, etc.) of $9,000,000 COP ($2,420 USD each) and 10 incentives for children’s literature or short publications of $4,500,000 COP ($1,210 USD each). These values are subject to the withholdings of law and are based in the Colombian peso.
Important facts to participate
- Works of non-fiction and fiction (novel, short story, poetry, essay, theater, children’s & YA literature, etc.) must be published in Spanish and their author must be Colombian.
- January 2015 to July 2021 editions only.
- Up to two titles by applicant are allowed.
- Up to 3 co-financing incentives can be awarded by title.
- Does not apply to educational textbooks, tourist guides, self-publishing projects, or those in which the author is also the translator.
Who can apply?
- Formally constituted for-profit foreign publishers. (Colombian publishers, authors or copyright agents may act on behalf of foreign publishers, but co-financing will be carried out with the latter.)
- The foreign publisher must present the contract for the purchase of rights by the Colombian publisher, the translator’s CV, publication date (until November 2022), and promotion and distribution plan for the translated work.
- The winning foreign publishers must include in the publication the Reading Colombia logo and the text «Published with the support from Reading Colombia, which contributed to the translation of this work».
- Invoice to the Colombian Book Chamber for the total value of the approved incentive.
